Biofuels from regrowing resources

In this project biofuels shall be obtained from carbohydrates via dehydratisation reactions in order decrease the amount of fossil-based fuels (Defossiling). The biofuels can be used as additive or as a total replacement of conventional fuels. Main goal is the synthesis of hydroxymetylfurfural (HMF) which shall be further converted to dimethylfurane (DMF) from carbohydrates (esp. glucose and fructose). These two compounds even have favorable properties in comparison to EtOH and biodiesel, which are at the moment the most common biofuels. Also pentoses will be investigated as potential starting materials and all possible sources compared regarding their efficiency.

Most attractive is of course the use of carbohydrates which are considered as “waste” and therefore are not in competition with the food industry.
