Peter Gaertner was born in Vienna, Austria on October 11, 1964. Since 1989 he is married to MMag. Petra Gaertner and they have one son Paul who was born in 1992. After finishing his studies of Technical Chemistry with emphasis on Organic Chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology (VUT) in 1988 with distinction he continued with his PhD thesis “Enantiomerically Pure Cyanohydrines as Intermediates in the Synthesis of Active Substances” at the same institution under the guidance of Prof. Christian Noe which he finished in 1991 with distinction. In these years 1987-1991 he was research assistant and moved on then to the position of university assistant at the Institute of Organic Chemistry. In 1996-1997 his position at VUT was interrupted for a postdoctoral stay as Erwin Schrödinger Fellow of the FWF with KC Nicolaou at The Scripps Research Institute, San Diego, California. In this time he contributed to the total synthesis of Brevetoxin A. Being back from California in 1997 he started to work on his habilitation with the topic “Stereoselective Reactions at Carbonyl Groups” for which he received the venia docendi in Organic Chemistry in 2000. In 2001 he was then promoted to an Associate University Professor at the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry at VUT. Since 2001 he is involved in many activities of the European Chemistry Thematic Network and its several follow-up networks, especially to name the founded European Chemistry Thematic Network Association. Since 2004 he is Dean of Academic Affairs for Technical Chemistry at VUT. From 2003 to 2008 he was Managing Editor of “Monatshefte für Chemie/Chemical Monthly” and since 2009 he is Editor-in-Chief of this journal.
